Cook Inc., Bloomington, Ind., manufacturer of the Oasis wound dressing, has obtained clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of full-thickness skin injuries such as second-degree burns, abrasions and diabetic vascular ulcers.
TheraSense, Alameda, Calif. received clearance from the FDA for FreeStyle, a virtually pain-free blood glucose test alternative. The product will enable diabetics to obtain blood samples from places other than their fingertips, such as the forearm or thigh.
"Our purpose in developing FreeStyle was to significantly improve diabetes management by reducing one of the biggest barriers to testing-pain," said Mark Lortz, TheraSense president and chief executive officer.
Sunrise Medical, Carlsbad, Calif., and its Continuing Care Group were awarded the United Kingdom's Millennium Award for the Parker Bath Series 400 and two Nightingale Design Awards for the Parker Bath and the Joerns UltraCare universal care bed. The Millennium Award recognizes Britain's most innovative companies, and the Nightingale Award recognizes excellent design of new products for the health care industry.
MiniMed Inc., Sylmar, Calif., is broadening its focus to include products for adult onset diabetes and other chronic illnesses, a move officials say will result in continued revenue growth of about 35 percent annually. The company will record revenues of about $210 million in 1999, said chief financial officer Kevin Sayer. He expects revenues to reach $290 million this year. Alfred Mann, chief executive officer, said that the company expects to submit an application for Food and Drug Administration clearance to market a disposable insulin pump.
Pride Mobility Products, Exeter, Pa., has opened Pride West, a new distribution center located in Las Vegas.
"We are excited about the new level of service and time lines of shipments for West Coast providers," said Scott Meuser, Pride chairman and chief executive officer. "As an extension of Pride Mobility Products, Pride West allows West Coast providers to utilize their current sales teams, account executives and customer service representatives with the presence of a Pride corporate office on the West Coast."
