During the past few months, CMS has proposed changes that would overhaul the entire power mobility device benefit for Medicare, including:

  • an interim final rule that eliminates the certificate of medical necessity for PMDs;

  • 63 new PMD codes — replacing the 49 that were issued in February — along with new product testing requirements; and

  • a draft local coverage determination by the durable medical equipment regional carriers that elaborates on the national coverage criteria released in May.
