Finger-prick Diabetes Test Could Give Way to Watch Monitor
Redwood City, Calif. People with diabetes may one day be able to monitor blood sugar levels with a watch-like device that has the same accuracy as a finger-prick test, according to results of a study presented at the American Diabetes Association annual meeting.
The GlucoWatch monitor, made by Cygnus, is designed to generate a small current, which enlarges skin pores and allows fluid to seep through them and be measured every 20 minutes, according to the Redwood City, Calif., company. It plans to market the device directly to users.
In other news related to diabetes, the Food and Drug Administration in June cleared the sale of MiniMed Inc.'s continuous glucose monitoring sensor. It is inserted just under the skin, usually in the abdominal area, according to the Sylmar, Calif., company. -K.G.
