Invacare Makes Bid for Scandinavian Mobility
Elyria, Ohio In an attempt to bolster its presence in the European home medical equipment market, Invacare Corp. has made a $131.5 million cash tender offer to acquire Scandinavian Mobility International A/S, Copenhagen, Denmark.
The Danish wheelchair manufacturer said it would consider the offer, which, at press time in mid-July, was to remain open until August 11.
Acquisition of the company would give Invacare the No. 1 market share in Europe, said Mal Mixon, Invacare chairman and chief executive officer. "Scandinavian Mobility's products and distribution strengths are complementary to Invacare's and will add to Invacare's already-improving performance in Europe," he said.
Officials said the purchase will also ensure that Invacare will reach its goal, set five years ago, of doubling the size of the company to $1 billion in sales in the year 2000. Invacare had 1998 revenues of $798 million. Scandinavian Mobility has sales of about $125 million. -S.H.
