PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (March 18, 2014)—SCA, a leading global hygiene and forest products company, announced the addition of American sailor Sara Hastreiter to Team SCA, the only all-female crew to compete in the 2014-2015 Volvo Ocean Race.
Hastreiter, raised in Wyoming and a current resident of Newport, R.I., discovered her passion for sailing less than four years ago. Since then, she has sailed over 40,000 nautical miles and competed in numerous races including the Caribbean 600, Newport to Bermuda Race, IRC Nationals, NYYC Race Week, Antigua Race Week and the St. Thomas Rolex Regatta.
“It means everything to me to be part of Team SCA” said Hastreiter. “From the first time I heard about offshore racing, I knew it was something I wanted to do, but something like this team has never been an option until now. It is pretty amazing to be out on the water and look around you to see a group of women racing together in a project backed by such a strong support crew and company as enthusiastic as SCA.”
Team SCA has been trialing candidates and, with some seven months left to the start of the race in October, has honed down the final crew to current squad of 12.
In addition to Hastreiter, SCA also confirmed today that Dee Caffari (GBR) and Elodie-Jane Mettraux (SUI) will be joining Team SCA. The three women join a squad that includes: Sally Barkow (USA), Carolijn Brouwer (NED), Sophie Ciszek (AUS), Sam Davies (GBR), Abby Ehler (GBR), Stacey Jackson (AUS), Annie Lush (GBR), Justine Mettraux (SUI) and Liz Wardley (AUS). Eleven members of the squad will make up the actual race team with the remainder as reserves, paralleling a practice usual in most sports teams.
The team is based in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote, and is due to complete two practice transatlantic sails in May, including a stop in Newport, R.I., as they ramp up their training in advance of the start of the race.
“Our excitement around the Volvo Ocean Race continues to build as we watch more and more exceptionally strong women join together to form Team SCA,” said Don Lewis, president of SCA in the Americas. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Sara Hastreiter, another American, join the team and represent SCA and our brands in the U.S., TENA and Tork.” Visit teamsca.com.
