ARLINGTON, Va. — RESNA is now offering a specialized certification in seating, positioning and wheeled mobility.
Certification as an assistive technology professional (ATP) is a prerequisite to take the Seating and Mobility Specialist exam, which consists of 165 multiple choice questions incorporating photographs and videos. The first exam is expected to be given in March.
The new designation will be ATP/SMS. RESNA officials said the term dates of the ATP and the SMS certifications will be "tied together so that both can be renewed at the same time." No additional continuing education will be required for the SMS; however, some of the continuing education for the ATP renewal must include seating and mobility training.
Cost of the exam is $250. To apply for the exam, the applicant must be an ATP in good standing and have a minimum of 1,000 hours of direct customer service in seating and mobility. Applicants must also meet two of seven professional criteria, including: Continuing education (1 CEU in seating and mobility-related services — CRTS designation in good standing from NRRTS fulfills this requirement); presentations/formal instruction; mentoring/supervision; client service delivery; advocacy; leadership; publications.
