NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — The Scooter Store announced last week it will open 51 new retail stores across the country.

While most of its customers have traditionally called in to inquire about scooters and power wheelchairs, the company will balloon the number of its retail locations — from the current eight to 59 — so people can see its products and meet store personnel up close and personal.

"We found that a growing number of our customers appreciate the retail experience where they have an opportunity to view the products with knowledgeable salespeople," said company founder and CEO Doug Harrison in a release. "Over the last two years we have made significant progress at placing our health care professionals closer to the customer and physician."

In 2007, the company added its Alliance Seating & Mobility division to offer complex rehab equipment, and over the past few years has also been testing other products. The retail expansion is based on its success in offering DME to customers who are "looking to tailor their health care and who are willing to invest discretionary dollars beyond their insurance coverage," the company said.

"The expanded store network further strengthens our in-home services with a retail experience for those customers and caregivers who want to interact with our products and health care professionals up close," said Harrison.

Combined with increasing local market direct sales resources, the company said the expansion will continue its transition to a full-service DME.
