An article in the Aug. 13 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association proposed extending Medicare to cover uninsured people age 55 and older. Expanding Medicare eligibility in this way would serve a “very vulnerable population” that wants to protect its health but does not have the resources to do so, said author Michael McWilliams, a medical resident at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital. By 2015, Americans aged 55 to 64 will make up nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population, the article predicted.
