As CMS prepares for DME competitive bidding, the agency should use its past experience, according to a General Accountability Office report issued Sept. 7. The report includes several recommendations to CMS concerning competitive bidding, including ways to increase potential savings, streamline implementation, ensure that Medicare is paying appropriately and promote beneficiary satisfaction. The report asks CMS to use the insight it gained from two previous competitive bidding demonstration projects in San Antonio, Texas, and Polk County, Fla., and to include DME items that were selected for the demonstration projects, along with others that account for high levels of Medicare spending.
