With the new code from CMS, the device is now covered by Medicare, commercial insurance & the VA

SALT LAKE CITY—Matia Mobility, a durable medical equipment company, has been granted a health care common procedure coding system (HCPCS) code for their “Tek” robotic mobilization device (RMD) by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This achievement allows more access to standing mobility for individuals with walking disabilities confined to wheelchairs and provides new opportunities for independence, physical health and mental well-being.

The Tek RMD is now covered by Medicare, commercial insurance and the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA). The device aims to enable users to stand and move at eye level, empowering them to participate fully in daily life. Additionally, the device aims to provide users with confidence and social inclusion by enabling participation in tasks like cooking, reaching high shelves and engaging in conversations and social interactions from a standing position.

Benefits of Standing: More Than Just Mobility

The ability to stand is recognized for its numerous health benefits, such as improved circulation, reduction in muscle atrophy and enhanced bone density. These advantages are critical for individuals who spend extended periods in a seated position. Additionally, standing has many mental benefits. Standing can foster a sense of empowerment and reduce the emotional and psychological strain often associated with being wheelchair-bound.

Beyond the physical and mental health benefits, standing at eye level can enable individuals to carry out activities of daily living (ADLs) more easily. The Tek RMD allows users to regain control over their lives in previously unimaginable ways, whether it's preparing meals, doing household chores, going to work or even pursuing hobbies and interests.

Expanded Coverage and Accessibility

With the HCPCS code approved, individuals can access the Tek RMD with greater ease and less financial barriers. The device's inclusion in Medicare and VA coverages aims to honor and support veterans and become even more accessible to those who have sustained mobility-limiting injuries.

"We are incredibly excited about this development," said Steven Boal, chief executive officer of Matia Mobility. "Receiving the HCPCS code from CMS means more people will have access to the life-changing benefits of the Tek RMD. Whether through Medicare, private insurance or VA benefits, our goal is to help as many individuals as possible reclaim their independence and improve their quality of life."
