OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (June 20, 2019)—Healthcare IT partner Netsmart announced its recent partnership with hospice and palliative care provider, Capital Caring. The Virginia-based health care organization selected Netsmart services and solutions to enrich person-centered care in hospice and palliative care by enhancing the clinician experience through improved workflows and access to the complete historical patient health record.
As staffing shortages and retention continue to present challenges for hiring and retaining top clinical talent, user experience and satisfaction are key focuses for many health care organizations as they look to select a technology partner. Value-based care also contributes to the transformation of how care is coordinated and delivered, requiring providers to make strategic moves to support holistic, cross-continuum care and put in place tools and resources to make it easy for clinicians to focus on what they do best—deliver care.
“Our clinicians need the best tools at hand to allow them to provide the best care possible, both effectively and efficiently,” said Capital Caring CTO Hershell Foster. “For us, it goes beyond the technology. It’s really about what a technology partner can provide to help us empower and equip our clinicians to provide better care and serve our community through a more seamless experience.”
Hospice and palliative care providers must have the ability to easily share and receive information with providers in acute and primary care settings to deliver true person-centered care. To facilitate the best care with the individual in mind, Capital Caring searched for a solution that not only included an easy-to-use system with intuitive, role-based workflows but also included interoperability capabilities to support connections with acute care referral sources, further enhancing their coordination with local health systems.
The Netsmart myUnity electronic health record (EHR) allows Capital Caring to eliminate paper and allow nurses to receive clinical data electronically and reconcile it with their data to avoid unnecessary rekeying, which often leads to errors and nurse and patient dissatisfaction. Comprehensive access to the record provides a clear view for clinicians, enabling improved clinical decision making along with creating more time to spend with patients.
“It was vital to us that our clinicians and other daily end-users had a voice in choosing the right EHR solution for our organization,” said Foster. “We included them in every step of consideration; we had them participate in product demos, encouraged them to ask questions and made sure they helped determine the right solution for us. When it came to the final decision, we had an overwhelming response. We agreed that Netsmart is the right partner to get us to where we want to go.”
Capital Caring will leverage powerful connections made possible through the Netsmart network and the Carequality interoperability framework, which will provide access to an individual’s complete health history across care settings. By connecting Capital Caring to the rest of healthcare, Netsmart will provide their clinicians with the ability to utilize as much information as possible to make fully-informed care decisions with the individual in mind.
“Capital Caring has taken a solid look to realize the importance in maintaining the best possible relationships between themselves, the individuals they serve, their health care partners and their staff,” said Netsmart CEO Mike Valentine. “Health care organizations feel pressured to carefully balance multiple and varying types of relationships and this group has taken an all-in, inclusive tactic to ensure that they have the best technology on hand with the capability to enhance the health care experience for everyone, regardless of the role they play. Their thoughtful approach will allow them to remain a highly-regarded, forward-thinking provider in the world of hospice and palliative care, paving the way to success for others.”
