The HHS Office of Inspector General plans to keep a close eye on HME spending next year. In its 2006 Work Plan, the agency outlined a number of HME-related issues that it intends to investigate, including:

  • Medicare payments for therapeutic footwear;

  • medical necessity of durable medical equipment;

  • Medicare pricing of equipment and supplies;

  • home blood glucose testing supplies;

  • durable medical equipment payments for beneficiaries receiving home health services;

  • Medicare drug reimbursement of average sales price;

  • collecting and maintaining average sales price data;

  • effectiveness of ASP cost controls;

  • monitoring of market prices for Part B drugs; and

  • duplicate payments for Part B drugs under the competitive acquisition program.
