Oxygen system manufacturer SeQual has attained a U.S. Army contract to produce oxygen concentrators for combat casualty care and for home health care oxygen-dependent patients.

The multi-million-dollar cooperative agreement calls for the development and production of a lightweight, battery-operated, high-durability oxygen concentrator designed to last four hours on one rechargeable battery.

According to Mark F. Arnold, product manager for field medical oxygen for Army Material Development Activity, the contract “substantially reduces the logistical requirements for field hospitals. Every five pounds of oxygen we ship anywhere in the world is shipped in a 150-pound steel canister.” He added that a typical patient will consume one canister a day.

According to some estimates, 15 percent of the military patient population require oxygen delivery systems, SeQual stated in a press release.
