The power device is a Red Dot Award winner

FRESNO, California—Sunrise Medical announced the launch of the Empulse R90, an add-on push-assist device for wheelchairs. This push device powers manual wheelchairs, allowing riders to go longer distances, receive assistance up ramps, preserve energy and prevent shoulder strain.

The R90 has numerous features that benefit the riders of manual wheelchairs. The R90 sits below the seat, maintaining the chair’s original size and turning circle. This allows users to maneuver forward, backward and 360 degrees with minimal drag or hang-up.

The patent-pending “V-LOCK” is a tapered latch that docks the R90 to the receiver on the wheelchair and can be easily attached. When the R90 is not needed, users can raise the wheel with the patent-pending wheel-up function.

The R90 includes a wireless control box which links with Bluetooth connection. The push-button propulsion allows users to start and control speed. Additionally, the control box has ergonomic buttons that can be mounted on frame tubes.

With a removable battery, the R90 is lightweight and can be swapped out, allowing users to go up to 19.5 miles with the extended battery. The standard battery meets current regulations to be carried on a plane and has a range of up to 9.8 miles.

The Sunrise Intelligence app allows users to select the performance profiles that suit their environments, indoors or outdoors. The app contains drive profiles tailored for environments, speed, torque and slope thresholds. Additionally, the app shows battery charge, so users are aware of when to recharge.

“All these features make the R90 easy to use, but the real highlight is its versatility,” said Bernd Krebs, chief technology officer at Sunrise Medical. “We did extensive field testing, and our riders enjoyed the great maneuverability, compactness and range, as well as the wheel up function.”
