The Intersection of Homecare and Infusion is Growing

It’s no secret that our health care system is increasingly shifting the site of care to the patient’s home. Infusion therapy is the among the specialized services that can be delivered in the home, safely and effectively—but it requires a nurse’s care. For decades, home infusion pharmacy and home care nursing have been interconnected. Today, that intersection is growing and the need for highly skilled home infusion nurses has never been stronger.

McKINNEY, Texas (December 17, 2018)—Soleo Health, a provider of complex specialty pharmacy and infusion services administered in the home and alternate sites of care, announced the opening of a new specialty infusion pharmacy location in Birmingham, Alabama. (November 29, 2018)—The National Home Infusion Association (NHIA), representing providers and suppliers of home and specialty infusion therapy, announced that its board of directors has appointed Connie Sullivan, BSPharm, president and chief executive officer, effective December 1, 2018. Sullivan will be the first pharmacist to hold the position of CEO since NHIA’s inception in 1991.

Fee increase and beneficiary cost sharing noted as points to watch.

(May 10, 2018)—After months of advocacy from AAHomecare and other industry stakeholders, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and CMS have cleared the Interim Final Rule related to HME (CMS-1687-IFC) to increase fee schedule rates for certain DME items and services through 2018. Language in the recent Omnibus bill also urged the Administration to release the rule and move on relief for rural providers.

MCKINNEY, Texas (December 18, 2017)—Home infusion stakeholders have been urging lawmakers to include the Medicare Home Infusion Therapy Access Act of 2017 (S 1738) or Section 101 of Medicare Part B Improvement Act of 2017 (HR 3178) in any end-of-year legislative package to ensure Medicare beneficiaries can continue to receive life-sustaining infusion therapies in their homes.


WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 27, 2017)—On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed the Medicare Part B Improvement Act of 2017 (HR 3178). The bill accelerates the implementation of Medicare payment for home infusion services to January 2019, two years earlier than the start date established in last year’s CURES bill. AAHomecare was one of 168 organizations and companies who asked Congressional leadership to move the implementation date forward earlier this year.
