OWINGS MILLS, Maryland—The Board of Certification/Accreditation (BOC) announced Wendy Miller, former special assistant to the CEO for BOC, has been named the 2024 recipient of its Jim Newberry Award for Extraordinary Service.
The award is named in honor of former BOC practitioner, board member and leader James (Jim) Newberry Jr. The award intends to recognize individuals who have provided extraordinary service at BOC, the community of stakeholders that BOC serves and/or individuals who mirror the service example modeled by Newberry.
“There are few people who have served BOC for so many years and in so many capacities,” said Cameron Steward, board chairman of BOC. “Wendy is very deserving to be among the ranks of BOC’s Newberry recipients. It is one of BOC’s highest honors, and our board of directors is proud to recognize Wendy for her many accomplishments and contributions.”
The organization said Miller received the award due to her dedication, volunteer efforts and service to the BOC for 30 years.
"For three decades, I had the opportunity to see BOC grow beyond what I could have ever imagined—both from the perspective of a volunteer and a staff member," Miller said. "I am incredibly grateful to be recognized as BOC's 2024 Newberry Award recipient and honored to continue to play my part in the organization's incredible story and history."
As a volunteer, Miller aimed to help develop the organization’s orthotist clinical simulation and multiple-choice exam teams. Miller then accepted a role on the organization’s board of directors in 1995, on which she served for six years. In 2000 and 2001, Miller sought to help create the organization’s orthotic fitter and mastectomy fitter certifications. In 2007, Miller became the organization’s facility accreditation manager, advanced to chief credentialing officer in 2015, and later served as special assistant to the CEO. In those roles, Miller aimed to enhance the organization’s accreditation process and create the durable medical equipment specialist certification.
Miller professionally retired from BOC in December 2023. Today, the organization said she enjoys retirement in her home state of Pennsylvania, where she spends time with her husband and grandchildren.
