WHEELING, ILL. (January 27, 2016)—MMF Industries, a world-class supplier of security, cash handling and metal products, has introduced a new product line to help families organize, secure and protect prescription drugs from misuse. With the abuse of prescription medication on the rise, the new line, Med-Master, is a secure locking storage solution that is helping to prevent mishandling and theft of drugs that are found in the home and easily accessible.
From 2004 to 2011, emergency room visits linked to the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs increased 128 percent, paving the way for Med-Master to launch a variety of locked steel case solutions to securely store medication. The units include a wireless, battery operated RFID lock or a 3-digit combination lock. In addition to being a lockable case, the mountable boxes include options such as a pill-sorting tray for organization, a magnifying glass with LED light for clear and easy label reading, a magnetic dry erase kit for important reminders and notes, and an interior shelf for flexible storage for a variety of bottle sizes.
“We are dedicated to the safety of all individuals who rely on prescription mediation, as well as their families. It is too often that medications are found in the wrong hands, or taken incorrectly, resulting in illegal selling of drugs, medical emergencies, or even death,” says Kevin Schroer, MMF’s Director of New Product Development. “Our goal is to provide families with a simple, affordable solution to keep prescribed drugs in a designated spot where they can be secured, organized and accessible only by those they are approved for.”
According to Partnership for a Drug-Free America, 61 percent of teens say that prescription medication is easier to get than illegal street drugs, and one in nine youths between 12 and 24 have used prescription drugs for non-medical reasons in the past year. Of those who abuse them, 70 percent get them from family members—without their permission.
Dr. Rallie McAlister, MD, MPH, a family physician and coauthor of The Mommy MD Guide to the Toddler Years says “Each year in the United States, thousands of children are seen in emergency departments across the country for accidental medication exposures, which can be fatal. The typical scenario involves a curious child finding and ingesting unsecured medication. In approximately 94 percent of cases, the medication belonged to a family member—a parent, grandparent or sibling—and the medication was left in a purse or bag, a pillbox, or on a counter or nightstand. It only takes a moment for children to find and swallow medication that can put their lives in danger. Parents and grandparents can protect the lives of the children they love by ensuring that all prescription and over-the-counter medicines in their homes are stored safely and securely.”
