AMSTERDAM (March 31, 2016)—Royal Philips today announced that it has received 37 awards at the 2016 “Red Dot Award: Product Design.” With 5,214 products from 57 countries submitted this year, the Red Dot Awards are one of the largest and most recognized product design competitions in the world.

“In an increasingly connected world, where the tangible becomes intangible, individuals are smart, well-informed and have higher expectations than ever. Today, thoughtful design isn’t just found in the consumer domain—it’s everywhere” said Sean Carney, Chief Design Officer at Philips. “At Philips, we believe in applying the power of the craft of design, whether we’re reimagining the shaver or creating world’s first app-based, smart device ultrasound solution.”

Among the 37 winners, two products from the Philips Care and Personal Health Solutions portfolio were awarded in the highest category “Red Dot: Best of the Best” for top design quality and groundbreaking design:

Red Dot: Best of the Best—IconiQ Special Edition Shaver

The IconiQ Special Edition Shaver is Philips’ latest electric 3-head shaver - its design echoes traditional shaving brushes and features wireless charging technology and a SmartClick interface. For a next generation shaving experience, the IconiQ Special Edition Shaver’s retro-futuristic look is designed for the modern gentleman who enjoys an indulgent shaving experience. This limited edition shaver makes use of premium materials, including an aluminum machined power switch, ceramic black body paint and chic warm metallic rose gold accents, for an indulgent yet innovative product.

The V-track precision blades gently position each hair in the best cutting position, even the flat laying and different hair lengths. The new fully flexible 8X directional heads maximize facial adaptability requiring less effort in every stroke. The shaver also cuts 30 percent closer, leaving skin in great condition. The shaver, cleansing brush and trimmer connect using intuitive SmartClick, while the wireless charging plate neatly charges the device and compatible mobile phones thanks to Qi technology.

Red Dot: Best of the Best—Lumify Ultra-Mobile Ultrasound Solution

Philips Lumify is the world’s first app- and subscription-based ultrasound solution, designed for on-demand point-of-care diagnostics. Philips’ new digital health approach to ultrasound brings together off-the-shelf compatible phones and tablets, a mobile application, advanced transducer innovations, integrated connectivity and support services to help healthcare providers enable fast, early intervention whenever care is needed. Available with a novel monthly subscription, Lumify allows providers and institutions to scale their imaging solution to meet their needs and environment. In a few quick steps, users can go from downloading the Lumify app to plugging a Philips transducer into their compatible device to scanning a patient.

Lumify is transforming the way care is delivered and the way providers connect with their patients. With personalized ultrasound, providers have quick decision- making capabilities at the point of care, enhancing the patient experience and reducing healthcare costs. Lumify also connects clinicians to actionable information through Philips Health Suite Digital Platform, which interfaces with providers’ IT systems. Lumify is currently available in the USA.

Philips’ sleep apnea mask, DreamWear, also received a Red Dot Award for its high design quality.

DreamWear, the most recent sleep apnea mask from Philips Respironics, was created with patient feedback from the beginning of the design process, and aims to help those with sleep apnea face one of their biggest challenges: long-term compliance. The sleep apnea mask is lightweight, has flexible tubing, and was designed so patients feel like they aren’t wearing a mask.

This is the third award the Dream Family products have received in the past several months, including the iF Design Award for DreamWear and the Providers’ Choice Gold Award at Medtrade Spring for DreamStation.

The Red Dot jury, consisting of 41 independent designers, design professors and specialized journalists, evaluated all entries according to strict criteria, including degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, quality, symbolic and emotional content, ecological compatibility and durability.

The Red Dot award wins follow on from Philips’ recent success at the 2016 iF Design Awards where the company received 48 awards. Philips Design has a team of more than 400 designers—one of the largest, most diverse of its kind in the world. The team includes 35 nationalities, located in 15 design studios around the world—from Netherlands, to Asia and the US.
