CMS reminds all health care providers that National Provider Identifiers will be required on claims sent on or after May 23, 2007. The agency recommends that during the transition period, which began Oct. 6, 2006, claims should be submitted with both the provider's NPI and a legacy number, such as a Provider Identification Number. Until testing of new software is complete, CMS cautions, during this time if claims are submitted only with an NPI, they could be rejected if Medicare's systems are unable to match the NPI with a legacy number.
