SPARTANBURG, S.C. (October 9, 2015)—QS/1 is pleased to announce it has received certification by Heartland Payment Systems to process the new chip-embedded credit cards. Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) compliant cards are the new standard for credit card safety in the United States.

“The EMV chip cards are the next step in helping protect consumers from credit card fraud,” said Sonny Anderson, QS/1’s vice president of Systems and Technology. “The certification from Heartland means our customers are protected from the liability shift included in the EMV standard.”

This is one of the first integrated point-of-sale (POS) solutions with EMV security standards available to the independent and small-chain pharmacy industry. This certification allows QS/1 customers using Heartland Payment Systems and QS/1-verified processing hardware to accept and authenticate the EMV chip cards. The financial liability has shifted to merchants who are not EMV-compliant in cases where a counterfeit chip-embedded card is used for a fraudulent transaction at a terminal that only accepts a card with a magnetic strip.

“We are pleased that QS/1, one of the leading pharmacy management software providers to independent, retail, chain and long-term care pharmacies, selected Heartland as one of the first processor/acquirers with which to certify for EMV,” stated Michael English, vice president of product development at Heartland. English went on to state, “QS/1's EMV protection against counterfeiting compliments the comprehensive suite of services QS/1 provides to their pharmacy customers, keeping them within HIPAA guidelines while streamlining customer service.”

“QS/1 is way ahead in the industry helping pharmacies meet EMV compliance standards so they don’t find themselves on the wrong side of the liability shift,” Anderson added.

QS/1 has helped independent and small-chain pharmacies integrate point-of-sale solutions into their operations for 25 years.
